Imagine you speak no English.

Imagine your spouse lands a great new job. The only problem is that you have to move thousands of miles away to a land whose language and alphabet are foreign to you. Add to the mix a new social and governmental system to learn.
If you are the adventurous sort, this may sound awesome!
But for a great many, it's a terrifying process. Even if the person has connection with a few people in the new land who have a similar background and language base, individuals still have to interact in the community while shopping, attending religious services and work or social events.
How do you learn what you need to not just survive but enjoy the journey?
You can learn a great deal via computer, cell phone or book, but there is no substitute for the unscripted interaction with another human being. This is where Literacy centers can help. Places like PCLC can help an English Language Learner (ESL) connect with a tutor to work on the most needed areas and gaps in their relationship to English. Tutors focus lessons that are usually one-on-one sessions based on specific needs. Tutors also listen and adapt as needed and move forward at the learner's speed.
