Independence Through Literacy

Writer: PCLC Director AF ReddenPCLC Director AF Redden

When you are not literate you become dependent. Dependent on others to read instructions, important medical information, rental agreements and so on. If you are embarrassed or ashamed of your lack of understanding you may just try to "wing it". This could get a person fired, in trouble with a land lord or perhaps even the law.

Limited literacy creates a world where the information you need has to be filtered through others. Trusting others to help you with your literacy needs can hold you back from your dreams. Other people do not truly understand the heart of your needs and hopes.

Being literate means YOU can manage your own stream of information. How it flows. How often you view it. How deep you dive into it. Literacy drops the shackles of dependency on agencies, friends and family. It opens up a world where you can start a Journey of Independence.
