It takes two.

So many people seem to be excited about what a literacy program can do for their state, community, neighborhood and friends. That's great but it takes two, student and tutor, working together to make a program like this work. The students are out there. Young and old faces of every color who are struggling with some form of illiteracy. Those students call and expect to have a long list of tutors waiting to work with them. I wish that were true.

Volunteerism may be popular in our current culture, but people are not following through with it. Every non-profit I know of is scrambling to gain enough manpower to get the job done. In a not so distant past there was a large pool of seniors looking for a place to contribute their time. Many stay-at-home moms sought to get involved in the community through action in local non-profits.

The economy has changed all that. Both parents are working and many times they are praying senior parents will donate their time not to local service groups but to the family. Grandparents everywhere are raising a second generation and the time they'd planned to contribute elsewhere is gone.

What this means for our communities is that we cannot wait to get involved. We - the young, mid-life and senior - need to work together to help the non-profit groups who are counting on the community to make the dream work. We cannot expect the few paid staff at each agency to manage all the needs that arise in changing our communities. We cannot wait til we are old to get involved. It is the challenge in our busy world to not just TALK about the needs in our communities, but to DO SOMETHING!

If you have a passion for literacy or those who are currently dealing with life with out it, please consider becoming a tutor. Don't put it off. There is a student waiting for YOU to decided to Start Your Journey Today!
