Literacy anxiety?

Literacy anxiety touches thousands in the state of Oklahoma alone.

Literacy (as defined on literacyadvance.org) is the ability to read, write, speak and listen, and use numeracy and technology, at a level that enables people to express and understand ideas and opinions, to make decisions and solve problems, to achieve their goals, and to participate fully in their community and in wider society.

Clearly, Literacy encompasses more than just the ability to read. It covers the ability to use what you know to fill out rental application, do the math to balance your budget, or even use the computer to apply for a better job. Literacy covers the ability to receive verbal instructions and apply them. This can be an especially difficult task for those whose native language is not English.

Every encounter in public can become a moment to be dreaded due to Literacy Anxiety. Connecting learners and tutors who work with practical solutions for adult learners can shut the door on anxiety and open up a world of confidence. Connect with PCLC and find out for yourself what a world with literacy confidence is like!
